Welcome to Vintage Chikankari. When you choose one of our pieces, you're not just buying a garment; you are embracing a heritage story rooted in the heart of Lucknow—a story that began over six decades ago.
This is the journey of our brand, woven through the lives of three families, a pivotal film, and a modern mission to protect the authenticity of an ancient craft.
The Foundation: Three Souls in 1962 Lucknow
Our tale begins in 1962, a time when Chikankari was a burgeoning art form known primarily to the locals of Lucknow. It was a remarkable coincidence that three individuals took their first steps into this world almost simultaneously:
- The Artisan: One man plunged directly into the craft, working hands-on in Chikankari block printing and embroidery.
- The Makers: The other two started their association indirectly, beginning their careers as tailors, the essential hands that shape the embroidered fabric.
Time passed, and these three men gradually established themselves. While the art of Chikankari was famous locally, its appeal had yet to travel far beyond the city's boundaries.

The Cinematic Catalyst: Anjuman and Farooq Shaikh (1986)
As the years rolled on, the children of these founders joined the family businesses. Then came the moment that changed the national conversation around Chikankari: the release of the 1986 film, Anjuman.
- The Exposure: Directed by Muzaffar Ali, the film was set in Lucknow and powerfully brought to light the exploitation and struggles of the Chikankari workers—many of whom were women who were severely underpaid for their intricate, time-consuming labour.
- The Trendsetter: The film sparked a national curiosity and a growing craze for the craft. Actor Farooq Shaikh, who starred in the movie, became a lifelong advocate. It's widely said that he began wearing Chikankari in his daily life, turning it into his signature style. Many credit him with playing a crucial role in popularizing the art form across India.
Following the film's success, Chikankari work flourished in Lucknow. Manufacturers who prioritized quality fabric, innovative designs, and honest workmanship saw their businesses grow, paving the way for the craft’s prosperity.
